LENA WAITHE & ALANA MAYO WERE MARRIED IN FRONT OF HARVEY MILK’S BUST

lena-waithe-and-alana-mayo_750x422Writer, producer, and actor Lena Waithe appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’s show, where she shared with guest host John Legend that she and her longtime partner, Alana Mayo, were recently privately married at San Francisco City Hall in front of the bust of LGBTQ rights activist Harvey Milk.

Waithe, whose Queen & Slim recently screened at AFI Fest, told Legend, “We snuck and did it. We didn’t really make any announcements.”

“We went to San Francisco. We went to the courthouse and got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust,” Waithe told Legend, noting the significance being married in a place steeped in LGBTQ history.

“So much history in our community,” Waithe said of San Francisco City Hall, adding that it was Mayo who suggested that’s where they should have their nuptials.

“It was a humbling day to marry someone so amazing but also to appreciate all of the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that,” she said.

“It is beautiful that you can live your full truth and be in love and declare it to the world,” Legend said.

“Everybody should be able to do that!” Waithe replied.

Waithe is an Emmy Award-winning writer for Netflix’s Master of None and the creator of Showtime’s The Chi.

Mayo is the president of production and development at Outlier Society, the production company she formed with Michael B. Jordan, according to GLAAD. She was previously a VP at Paramount, where she worked on films including The Big Short, Fences, and Selma.

Waithe and Mayo dated for three years before they became engaged on Thanksgiving 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
